Does a sedentary lifestyle, or lack of physical exercise, cause fibromyalgia ?
People with fibromyalgia often understandably avoid physical exercise because of their pain and fatigue. Although a lack of exercise is not thought to cause fibromyalgia, it can cause muscles to atrophy and decrease blood flow throughout the body, exacerbating FMS symptoms of fatigue, stiffness, and depression. Patients with fibromyalgia are strongly urged to maintain a regimen of stretching and low-impact exercise, under the guidance and care of a physical therapist if necessary.
