Getting a Disability Lawyer in Pennsylvania

What are the odds of winning social security disability or SSI disability benefits in Pennsylvania? According to information provided by the federal office of disability programs, more than half of all Pennsylvania residents who applied for disability benefits were turned down within several months of filing an application. How many of those individuals gave up on their claim at that point or decided to appeal the decision is unclear. However, of those who decided to file the first appeal available to them (known as a review or reconsideration), nearly seventy percent also received a denial notice.

Why are so many social security disability and SSI claims denied nationally and in the state of Pennsylvania? Some would argue that a "culture of denial" exists within the social security administration and, more specifically within the bureau of disability determination.

Can getting a lawyer involved in your case improve your chances of being awarded benefits in Pennsylvania? At the initial claim level and at the first appeal level, a lawyer can sometimes make a difference, and sometimes that difference can turn what would have been a loss into a win. However, there is little doubt that at a disability hearing before a judge, a lawyer who specializes in social security disability and SSI claims can significantly improve the odds of winning a claimant's benefits for them. Nationally, about six out of ten cases that are decided by disability judges are approved when a claimant is represented by a lawyer versus only four out of ten claimants who appear at a hearing unrepresented.
