What is the standard dose of guaifenesin used to treat fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia patients are generally sensitive to medication, so it is best to begin with a small dosage and work your way up, through trial and error, to the dose needed to control symptoms. Patients may begin with 300 mg twice daily for one week (or 200 mg twice a day of 40 mg fast-acting tablets such as Pro Health or Solo Guai. If after one week fibro symptoms worsen, then it may be assumed that the guaifenesin is cleansing the system. If patients do not respond to this dose, then they can work their way up gradually to higher doses.
There have been no serious side effects reported with guaifenesin use, and it’s regularly prescribed at 2400 mg per day for treatment of congestion. People taking guaifenesin must avoid salicylates—they block the action of guaifenesin. Examples of products containing salicylates include aspirin, toothpastes and ointments that contain menthol, and herbal preparations for pain relief, which may contain natural salicylates such as willow bark, meadowsweet, etc.
