What is the link between fibromyalgia and abnormal sleep patterns ?
Normally when a person enters the deepest stage of sleep, the brain secretes growth hormone and causes the liver to make insulin-like growth factor (IGF1) to help with muscle repair. Evidence indicates that fibromyalgia patients often suffer from a sleep disorder that prevents them from spending enough time in the deepest, most restorative sleep (stage 4). This may lead to a shortage of IGF1 in the body that disrupts the natural process of cellular repair.
