What kind of painful sensations are associated with Fibromyalgia?
Pain from fibromyalgia is generally widespread, rather than located at a specific point in the body in which an injury may have occurred. Fibromyalgia is characterized by pain in one of 18 tender points defined by the American College of Rheumatology (ACR), and is activated when pressure is applied to the tender point. The official tender points are found in the muscles at the back of the head, upper back and neck, upper chest, elbows, hips and knees.
In addition, the pain generally persists for months at a time, although symptoms may wax and wane, or become aggravated by exercise or emotional stress. Many patients with fibromyalgia also experience painful cramps in the abdomen and bladder, or experience heightened pain during menstrual periods.
