How do antidepressants help treat fibromyalgia symptoms ?
Studies have shown antidepressants can help increase feelings of physical and emotional well being in fibromyalgia patients by increasing amounts of serotonin in the system (serotonin levels are often found to be abnormally low in those with fibromyalgia). Two categories of antidepressants, the tricyclic and selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs), have been found to be especially effective for treatment of muscle pain and insomnia. Patients must remember that antidepressants may be prescribed at low levels when used to help improve sleep and relieve pain. If the patient is experiencing depression, higher levels of these or other medications may be required.
